Overview
Thanks to their wide scope of functions, the interface modules of the scalable SIMATIC ET 200SP I/O system, even in their basic versions, cover a wide range of applications. The basic functions of the interface modules include:
- Short data update times of typically 1 ms
- Single Hot Swap (withdrawing and insertion of an I/O module during operation without impairing the communication with the remaining modules)
- Operation with gaps (empty BaseUnits)
- Complete diagnostic support, extending to channel-by-channel diagnostics
- Configuration control / option handling (adaptation of the actual configuration via user program)
- Device replacement without programming device, with automatic re-initialization, with and without topological configuring
- I&M data 0 to 3 (electronic rating plate with non-volatile storage of plant data)
- Firmware update
- Pluggable 24 V DC supply connection
- Mains/voltage failure buffering time of at least 5 ms or 10 ms
- Labeling option via optional labeling strips and equipment labeling plates
When using PROFINET interface modules, the following basic functions are also included:
- Media redundancy (MRP)
- Integrated 2-port switch
- Freely selectable connection system (Standard function class and above) and physical connection (High Feature function class and above) by means of SIMATIC BusAdapters, also as system-integrated media converter from fiber-optic to copper cable. Can also be used for interface modules with MultiFieldbus interface.
- Reset button for simple return to factory settings without the need for programming device
- Automatic synchronization of the backplane bus to the PROFINET cycle to minimize the response time fluctuations (jitter)

Application
IM 155-6 MF High Feature MultiFieldbus interface module
Due to support of the PROFINET, EtherNet/IP and Modbus protocols, the IM 155-6 MF High Feature is designed for use on a wide range of Ethernet controllers. It supports applications with a high, flexible demand for functions, as well as a large station expansion of up to 64 modules (max. 1 024 IO signals). In addition, the station can be expanded by as many as 16 IP67 modules of the SIMATIC ET 200AL series using BA-Send/BU-Send.
PROFINET interface module IM 155-6 PN Basic
The IM 155-6 PN BA is designed mainly for simple PROFINET applications with moderate station expansion of up to 12 modules (max. 192 IO signals) and 32 bytes each for input data and output data. All I/O modules apart from PROFIsafe can be used. It is therefore the economical solution for simple machine and retrofit tasks.
PROFINET interface module IM 155-6 PN Standard
The IM 155-6 PN Standard is designed mainly for standard PROFINET applications with average station expansion of up to 32 modules (max. 512 IO signals). All I/O modules, including PROFIsafe, can be used. In addition, the station can be expanded with as many as 16 IP67 modules of the SIMATIC ET 200AL series using BA-Send/BU-Send. All SIMATIC BusAdapters with Cu interface can be used.
PROFINET interface module IM 155-6 PN High Feature
The IM 155-6 PN High Feature is designed mainly for PROFINET applications with a high, flexible demand for functions, as well as a large station expansion of up to 64 modules (max. 1024 IO signals). All I/O modules, including PROFIsafe, can be used. In addition, the station can be expanded with as many as 16 IP67 modules of the SIMATIC ET 200AL series using BA-Send/BU-Send.
Unlike the other interface modules, the IM 155-6 PN/2 HF supports the following additional functions:
- Use of BusAdapters, also with fiber-optic cable connection
- Increased data volume of up to 1440 bytes for both input and output data and up to 288 bytes per module
- Multi Hot Swap (withdrawing and insertion of any number of I/O modules during operation without impairing the communication with the remaining modules)
- S2 redundancy
- Isochronous mode from 250 µs
- Oversampling
- MSI/MSO
- Shared device with up to four controllers
- Up to four subslots per module
With its third port, the 3-port IM 155-6 PN/3 HF interface module allows the expansion of the PROFINET topology by a spur line. Typical applications are:
- Connection to a higher-level network
- Programming device access in the field
- Cable outlet via festoon cable system
The local IO data coupling allows data to be exchanged between up to 4 controllers quickly, deterministically, and without elaborate configuring.
PROFINET interface module IM 155-6 PN High Speed
The IM 155-6 PN High Speed is designed mainly for PROFINET applications with very short response times. All I/O modules, including PROFIsafe, can be used.
Compared to the IM 155-6 PN HF, the IM 155-6 PN HS has the following functional differences:
- For input and output data with up to 32 bytes per module, max. 30 modules per station
- Isochronous mode from 125 µs
- MRPD
- PROFINET Performance Upgrade (Fast Forwarding, Dynamic Frame Packaging, Fragmentation)
PROFIBUS interface module IM 155-6 DP High Feature
The IM 155-6 DP High Feature is designed mainly for PROFIBUS applications with average station expansion of up to 32 modules (max. 512 IO signals). All I/O modules, including PROFIsafe, can be used. In addition, the station can be expanded with as many as 16 IP67 modules of the SIMATIC ET 200AL series using BA-Send/BU-Send.
Redundant IM 155-6 PN R1 interface module
The IM 155-6 PN R1 can especially be used for high availability applications in combination with SIMATIC S7-1500H and the TIA Portal. It enables the integration of ET 200SP standard modules into the high availability system and also requires little space.
Redundancy is ensured by the use of two identical interface modules on a special BaseUnit, which are switched between in the event of a fault. The interface modules can be changed from the front during operation.
The IM 155-6 PN R1 can be operated with all BusAdapters and I/O modules of the SIMATIC ET 200SP available up to now. When using the IM 155-6 PN R1, the SIMATIC system rail is mandatory.
Design
The IM 155-6 interface module is snapped directly onto the DIN rail (7.5 x 35 mm or 15 x 35 mm) or onto the SIMATIC system rail.
- Optional labeling using light gray or yellow labeling strips. There is a choice of 2 materials:
- Film strips on a roll with 500 strips, for thermal transfer roll printer
- Card (180 g/m2), DIN A4 sheets with 100 strips each, for laser printer
- Optional equipment marking using slide-in equipment labeling plates
- Different connection types of the fieldbus by means of SIMATIC BusAdapter for PROFINET or MultiFieldbus interface modules in Standard function class or above
- Under ambient conditions in accordance with SIMATIC standard using BA 2xRJ45 for connection via RJ45 plug
- In the case of mechanical loading during operation and/or increased EMC requirements, the use of BusAdapters with M12, FC or fiber-optic cable interface is recommended.
- For increased potential differences, BusAdapters with fiber-optic interface can be used. These are also available as hybrid variants with copper interface (integrated media converter). For larger distances, BusAdapters are also available with LC and LC-LD glass fiber-optic connections.

- The High Feature interface modules can optionally be equipped with the system-integrated strain relief for the PROFINET cables.
