Description

[ez-toc]

Overview

  • Considerably enhances system availability:
    • Reaction-free hot swapping of I/O modules during operation; system remains in RUN mode when replacing one or more I/O modules
    • Reserve capacity (= gaps in system configuration) for later use
  • Can also be used exclusively with ET 200MP and PROFINET
  • Can be inserted in the ET 200MP standard DIN rail, replaces the U connectors
  • The comprehensive system functions of ET 200MP can still all be used
  • Can be used with all PROFINET IO controllers by configuring via GSD file and PROFINET

Benefits

  • Increase of plant availability through reaction-free hot swapping of I/O modules during operation; system remains in RUN mode when replacing one or more I/O modules.
  • Reserve capacity (= gaps in system configuration) for later use
  • Simple installation without tools
  • Use of the S7-1500 standard mounting rail means no special accessories are required and there is no need to change the installation dimensions of the ET 200MP station
  • Scalable and space-saving design provided by versions with 4, 8 or 12 slots
  • Can be used with all PROFINET IO controllers by configuring via GSD file
  • Simple engineering since there are no configuration rules

Application

Particularly when combined with the active backplane bus, ET 200MP is intended for applications in which even short system failures can result in significant economic damage. Typical active backplane bus applications include:

  • Logistics systems, e.g. high-bay warehouses, baggage handling systems in airports or letter and parcel sorting systems in mail logistics plants, where disruptions to the just-in-time chain can lead to high follow-up costs.
  • Infrastructure, e.g. lighting and signaling systems in tunnels, water/wastewater treatment in sewage or power plants which have to be operationally reliable 24/7.
  • Continuous processes which cannot be interrupted for reasons of process control, such as in wafer production in the semiconductor industry, the production of drugs in the pharmaceutical industry or reactions in the chemical industry.
  • Plants in difficult to access geographical locations and which are required to function for a longer period time, such as several days, when I/O modules fail, until a service technician can come and fix the problem on-site. Examples are offshore oil drilling or wind farms, or compressor systems in gas pipelines.
  • Other applications include interlockings in railway technology or subways, or use of ET 200MP on ships.

Many of these systems run for 10 to 20 years and are supplemented during their service life. In order to reserve capacity for future functional expansions, the active backplane bus allows for gaps to be left wherever required in the station configuration which can be equipped with I/O modules if and when required.

Design

The active backplane bus is a unit which can be used instead of the U connector. It has a fixed length and a fixed number of slots. The left slot is reserved for the interface module (IM). All the other slots to the right can be used for the S7-1500/ET 200MP I/O modules. Both 35 mm wide and 25 mm wide modules can be plugged in. During equipping, gaps with any number of free slots can be left at any position. Slot covers provide mechanical stability and protect against electrostatic discharge. These covers are not included in the active backplane bus delivery and must be ordered separately.
The active backplane bus itself is simply inserted into the regular S7-1500 DIN rail, just like the U connector. The active backplane bus is attached into the S7-1500 DIN rail by fitting and screwing into place the interface module, I/O modules and any slot covers.

For the user it makes no difference whether the station is equipped with an active backplane bus or a U connector. In addition to a version with 12 slots for I/O modules, a version with 4 or 8 slots is also available for a space-saving design. Suitable files and macros for integration in the relevant planning and design tools can be downloaded for free.

Function

The active backplane bus enables the reaction-free hot swapping of individual or multiple I/O modules during operation.
It also allows for gaps to be left in the station configuration. This allows reserves to be used at a later point in time.

Configuration, parameterization and diagnostics

ET 200MP can still be configured and parameterized via TIA Portal when using the active backplane bus. Alternatively using other configuration tools with a GSD file, see under this link.

Please observe the functional limitations which may be present with the respective configuration tool.
