The optical readers of the SIMATIC MV500 series are a further development of the tried-and-tested SIMATIC MV400 device family. The SIMATIC MV500 family offers devices with different sensor resolutions and two separate Ethernet ports (see figure) as well as different character sizes and work memory capacities.

The optical readers of the SIMATIC MV500 series are designed for reading 1D and 2D codes. The list of readable codes includes all common matrix and barcodes which, regardless of the printing technology and the carrier medium used, can all be reliably recognized.

SIMATIC MV500 offers a significant increase in performance compared to the predecessor products of the SIMATIC MV440 family. In addition to higher processor power (up to 4 times more than SIMATIC MV440) and a larger work memory of up to 2 GB, the new optical readers are characterized by their flexibility and maximum industrial security thanks to a wide range of high-performance, individually configurable accessories (e.g. E-focus lenses in various focal lengths, flexibly controllable ring lights, protective barrels, etc.). Thanks to the modular design of SIMATIC MV500 devices, the E-focus and the software-controlled selection of illumination, a wide variety of image processing applications – even under changing production conditions and in difficult lighting situations – can be implemented easily and reliably. Configuration via web-based management and integration into the TIA Portal simplify configuration. The one-button configuration for network parameters allows automatic assignment of IP addresses for a connected PC. Administrator rights are not required here. One-button configuration for reading parameters offers automatic adjustment of these parameters as well as the lens focus and lighting, without opening the user interface (WBM). All optical readers of the MV500 family have a compact design and the high degree of protection IP67 and are particularly suitable for use in confined spaces and harsh industrial environments.

Integration in industrial automation environments is ideally performed in a TIA Portal project for PROFIBUS and PROFINET. SIMATIC MV500 is perfectly prepared for this. The products are an integral part of the SIMATIC TIA Portal engineering software. This means that all software modules required for connection to SIMATIC S7 controllers are already included in the engineering software, have been system-tested and are supplied with the SIMATIC TIA Portal product.

The selection of the required electrical and optical components of an automation project is possible without specialist knowledge using the TIA Selection Tool. The connection to an S7 controller is made via standard FB (Ident profile) directly from the TIAP library for SIMATIC and SIMOTION. SINUMERIK and open interfaces are also supported.

The SIMATIC MV500 optical readers can be configured via the web-based user interface (HTML5) located on the device using a field programming device but also many other devices with a HTML5-capable browser.

Simple, secure and standardized connection of SIMATIC MV500 devices to cloud applications is also possible. This is done via the SIMATIC S7-1500 controller and the CP1545-1 communications processor or via a new generation SIMATIC RF18xC/CI communications module and an Industrial IoT gateway such as SIMATIC CC716 (available soon).
