Application

The SCALANCE X-200IRT Industrial Ethernet switches permit the construction of isochronous real-time (IRT) Industrial Ethernet line and star topologies. Ring structures can also be designed using the integral redundancy manager (RM). Redundant ring connections are also possible. Thanks to innovative switching technology, the special requirements of automation with regard to line topologies with fast data communication and simultaneous compliance with isochronous mode for motion control applications and unlimited IT openness within a single technology have been satisfied, based on the PROFINET standard.

The switches with IP30 degree of protection have been designed for use in the control cabinet.

Real-time Ethernet

  • Interfacing of the PROFINET devices to the PROFINET controller through high-performance, optimized data transmission

    Reaction-free transmission of real-time and non-real-time communication on the same line

Also through isochronous real-time (IRT) Ethernet

  • Isochronous real-time communication based on the transmission method of the IEEE 802.3 standard by combining the “Cut Through” and “Store and Forward” switching mechanisms
  • For drive controls, PROFINET with isochronous real-time is one of the best performing systems worldwide with regard to its isochronous and deterministic response.
    With a cycle time of 250 µs and a jitter of less than 1 µs, axes can be controlled in isochronous mode leaving 50% of the bandwidth available without restrictions for IT communication, for example.

Design

  • With their rugged metal enclosure, the SCALANCE X-200IRT switches to IP30 degree of protection are optimized for mounting on a DIN rail and a SIMATIC S7-300 rail. Direct wall mounting in various positions is also possible. Thanks to the SIMATIC S7-300 housing dimensions, the devices are ideally suited for integration into an automation solution with SIMATIC S7-300 components.
  • The switches have a 2-pin or 4-pin terminal block for connecting the redundant supply voltage (2 x 24 V DC).
    The status information is indicated by means of a row of LEDs (power, link status, data communication, power supply, signaling contact).

The SCALANCE X-200IRT modules are available with the following port types:

  • 10/100BaseTX, RJ45 connection
    RJ45 port, automatic detection of data transmission rate (10 or 100 Mbps), with autosensing and autocrossover function for connecting IE FC cables over IE FC RJ45 plug 180 at distances up to 100 m.
  • 100BaseFX, ST/BFOC connection method
    ST/BFOC ports for direct connection to Industrial Ethernet glass fiber-optic cables up to 5000 m for configuring line and star topologies.
  • 100BaseFX, SC RJ connection method
    SC RJ ports for connection to Industrial Ethernet POF (50 m) and PCF FOC (100 m) using SC RJ plug connectors

Network topology and network configuration

The SCALANCE X-200IRT Industrial Ethernet switches are usually installed in a control cabinet together with the stations to be connected (e.g. ET 200SP). When configuring the network, the following boundary conditions must be observed:

  • Length of the TP cable between two SCALANCE X switches:
    • Max. 100 m with IE FC cable and IE FC RJ45 plug 180
    • Max. 10 m with TP cord
  • Length of the optical cables
    • Max. 4000 m with Industrial Ethernet glass fiber-optic cables (62.5/125 µm)
    • Max. 5000 m with Industrial Ethernet glass fiber-optic cables (50/125 µm)
    • Max. 100 m with Industrial Ethernet PCF fiber-optic cables.
    • Max. 50 m with Industrial Ethernet POF fiber-optic cables.
  • IP address:
    The IP address is assigned by means of the DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol). If there is no corresponding server in the network, the IP address can be assigned using the supplied software tool PST (Primary Setup Tool) or STEP 7/TIA Portal. SCALANCE X-200IRT switches and their real-time functions are configured with STEP 7/TIA Portal.

Commissioning and diagnostics

PROFINET diagnostic interrupts from SCALANCE X-200IRT switches can be displayed with the appropriate SIMATIC engineering tools and processed in the PLC. The engineering outlay for the PLC and HMI has been drastically reduced due to the complete integration in the SIMATIC concept for system error messages.

SCALANCE X-200IRT Industrial Ethernet switches can also be integrated in a network management system (e.g. SINEC NMS) using the standardized Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). In the event of faults in the device, error messages (SNMP traps) can be sent to a network management system (e.g. SINEC NMS) or as an email to a specified network administrator.

The integrated web server enables configuration and diagnostics settings to be made using a standard web browser. Statistical information can also be read out over the web server. Warning thresholds, and alarms generated by them, permit early recognition of critical fiber states (only with POF). Cable failures (fiber breakage) can thus be avoided, and plant downtimes reduced, since maintenance work can be carried out at an early point in time and outside production periods.
