Overview
The Siemens 3RT2637-1AP05 is a high-performance capacitor contactor specifically engineered for switching capacitive loads in reactive power compensation systems. A specialized version of the SIRIUS 3RT2 series, this contactor is designed to handle the unique demands of AC-6b duty, ensuring reliable and efficient operation. Its core innovation lies in the integrated precharging resistors, which are engaged via leading auxiliary contacts to limit the peak charging current.
This critical feature minimizes network disruptions, reduces stress on the electrical system, and extends the lifespan of both the contactor and the connected capacitors. With a rating of 75 kVAr at 400 V, a 230 V AC control coil, and robust screw terminals, the 3RT2637-1AP05 is a reliable solution for industrial and commercial applications requiring precise and safe capacitor switching.
Key Features & Benefits
- Optimized for Capacitive Loads (AC-6b): Specifically designed to handle the high inrush currents associated with switching capacitors, preventing premature wear and system disturbances.
- Integrated Precharging Resistors: Leading auxiliary contacts bring precharging resistors into the circuit before the main contacts close. This patented technology effectively limits the charging current, protecting the network and equipment.
- Minimizes Network Impact: By reducing peak currents, the 3RT2637-1AP05 helps to maintain power quality and minimize voltage sags or harmonics caused by capacitor switching.
- Durable and Reliable: Built to IEC standards (IEC 60947 series, IEC 60831-1, IEC 61921), this contactor ensures long-term performance and safety in demanding industrial environments.
- Easy Integration: The standard Size S2 form factor and screw terminals simplify installation and wiring into existing control panels.
- Versatile Application: Ideal for switching both choked and unchoked capacitors in power factor correction systems, as well as for converter applications.
- Integrated Auxiliary Contacts: The base unit includes two normally closed (2 NC) auxiliary contacts, offering flexibility for control and signaling purposes without the need for additional components.
Function
The 3RT2637-1AP05 operates by employing a two-stage switching process. When the control coil is energized, the contactor’s armature pulls in. During this action, leading auxiliary contacts close first, momentarily connecting precharging resistors into the circuit. This allows the capacitor to pre-charge gradually, effectively dampening the high inrush current. Immediately following this, the main power contacts close, bypassing the resistors and providing the full current path to the capacitor bank. This innovative sequence ensures a smooth and controlled switching operation, which is crucial for the longevity of the equipment and the stability of the power network.
Protection
Proper short-circuit, overload, and overvoltage protection are essential for all connections. For the main power connections, refer to the technical product data sheet for suitable protection recommendations. Auxiliary and control circuits must be protected in accordance with relevant standards, using devices like circuit breakers or suitable power supplies with current-limiting functions. For additional protection against overvoltage on the control coil, optional surge suppressors (RC elements, varistors, etc.) can be retrofitted.
Auxiliary Contact Configuration
This specific model, part of the 3RT263 family, features integrated auxiliary contacts for the precharging resistors and an additional 2-pole lateral auxiliary switch on the left side with 2 NC contacts. This configuration provides ample functionality for interlocking, signaling, and control circuits. The contactor can be further expanded with additional lateral auxiliary switches, subject to the permissible configuration.
