[ez-toc]
Overview
- PID Self-Tuner: For expanding existing PID controllers to create self-tuning PI or PID controllers.
- Optimization of PI or PID controllers with 3-step action (HEATING – OFF – COOLING)
- Convenient online initial setting and online adaptation during operation
- Ideally applicable to temperature controllers, but also suitable for level and flow controllers
- Can be used with SIMATIC S7-300 (CPU 313 or higher), SIMATIC S7-400 and WinAC; in combination with PID Control (integrated in STEP 7), Standard PID Control, Modular PID Control, FM 355, FM 455 as well as with any PID algorithm
Licensing
- The PID Self-Tuner complements the Standard PID Control or Modular PID Control software packages.
- Function blocks may be copied as often as required onto any programming devices/PCs. However, one license is always required for each CPU on which they are used.
You can find more information on the Software Update Service, license types, Online Software Delivery and handling your software licenses with the Automation License Manager here: this link.
Application
The “PID Self-Tuner” software package expands existing PID controllers into self-tuning PI or PID controllers. Easy to understand functions and systematically structured examples facilitate the adaptation of the controller to the process during operation.
PID Self-Tuner is suitable for the optimization of:
- Temperature controls.
- Liquid level controls.
- Flow control systems.
PID Self-Tuner has previously been used successfully in the following applications for the temperature control and self-optimization of
- hot plates, e.g. for warming foil or pressing pizza dough,
- tunnel and conveyor furnaces,
- solder baths, e.g. in PCB manufacture and
- water baths.
PID Self-Tuner V5.1 is now also suitable for temperature control and optimization for
- processes with heating and active cooling, in which the cooling must be identified,
- plastic extrusion and
- injection molding.
In addition, the function of a control zone was added in the PID Self-Tuner V5.1 which makes particularly fast heating or cooling possible. Outside the control zone, maximum heating or cooling is performed. The control zone function can be deactivated.
PID Self-Tuner works most efficiently for processes with:
- a stable asymptotic transient response.
- delay times that are not too long (delay time <0.1 x build-up time)
- sufficient linearity in the selected operating range
- sufficient quality of measurement signals
- Processes that are not intensified too much
PID Self-Tuner can be flexibly combined with
- PID Control (integrated in STEP 7),
- Standard PID Control,
- Modular PID Control,
- FM 355,
- FM 455,
- as well as any PID algorithm
in the systems
- SIMATIC S7-300 (CPU 313 or higher),
- SIMATIC S7-400 and
- WinAC.
Design
The PID Self-Tuner software package consists of the following components:
- Function blocks:
- “FB-TUN_EC” for the online initial setting and adaptation of continuous PID controllers.
- “FB-TUN_ES” for the online initial setting and adaptation of PID controllers with position feedback as well as online initial adjustment of PID controllers without position feedback.
- Examples:
Recent additions include detailed examples for the control products Standard PID Control V5.2, Modular PID Control V5.1 and the control modules FM 355 and FM 455. - Electronic manual including brief instructions on commissioning (Getting Started); in German and English.
Function
The function blocks have the following modes:
- Online initialization of the PID controller for an unknown process; initiation via a setpoint step.
- Online adaptation of the PID controller for an unknown process. Subsequent optimization with a considerably smaller setpoint step.
- Structural changeover at the PID controller in the case of positive setpoint steps. To avoid overshoot during the heating of temperature paths.
- Manual mode for manual control of the controller
