Overview
The Siemens 3RT2617-1AK63 is a specialized capacitor contactor designed for the reliable and safe switching of capacitive loads. Part of the SIRIUS 3RT2 series, this robust device is engineered to minimize the negative impacts of high inrush currents, making it ideal for reactive current compensation systems and power factor correction applications. With its integrated precharging resistors, the 3RT2617-1AK63 ensures a smooth and controlled connection of capacitors, protecting both the contactor and the electrical network.

Key Features and Benefit
- Optimized for Capacitive Loads: Specifically designed for switching capacitive loads (AC-6b) up to 12.5 kVAr at 400 V, preventing premature wear and damage.
- Integrated Precharging Resistors: Leading auxiliary contacts engage precharging resistors before the main contacts close. This limits peak charging currents, minimizing stress on the power supply network and extending the lifespan of the equipment.
- High Reliability: Built to the highest industry standards (IEC 60947, IEC 60831, IEC 61921), ensuring reliable and safe operation in demanding industrial environments.
- Versatile Applications: Suitable for switching choked or unchoked capacitors in reactive current compensation systems and for use with converters.
- Compact Design: The Size S00 form factor allows for space-saving installation in control panels and electrical cabinets.
- Easy Integration: Features a standard 1 NO + 1 NC auxiliary contact configuration and screw terminals for straightforward wiring and connection.
Function
The 3RT2617-1AK63 capacitor contactor functions by employing a two-stage switching process. When the contactor is energized, the leading auxiliary contacts close first, engaging integrated precharging resistors. This allows the capacitor to be precharged and the inrush current to be limited. A fraction of a cycle later, the main contacts close, bypassing the resistors and providing the full current path to the capacitor. This controlled process is crucial for preventing voltage dips and harmonic distortions in the electrical system, ensuring stable operation.
Protection and Safety
The device is designed with safety in mind:
- Short-circuit and Overload Protection: It is essential to protect all connections (main, auxiliary, and control supply) using suitable external measures like fuses or circuit breakers as per IEC standards.
- Overvoltage Protection: The contactor can be retrofitted with optional surge suppressors (RC elements, varistors, etc.) to dampen opening surges and protect the coil.
For more detailed information on protection schemes, refer to the Digital Configuration Manual for load feeders or the technical product data sheet.
Auxiliary Contact
The basic unit comes with two free auxiliary contacts (1 NO + 1 NC). This allows for flexible integration into control circuits and signaling systems. Additional lateral auxiliary switches can be mounted to expand the functionality if required.
