Please read the notes under “More information”.
Function
Batteries and accumulators
From a technical viewpoint, a battery is a combination of several similar galvanic cells/elements that are connected in series.
Batteries can be composed of primary cells (not rechargeable) or secondary cells (rechargeable), which are also referred to as accumulators.
When an accumulator is charged, electrical energy is converted into chemical energy. When a load is connected to the battery, the chemical energy is converted back into electrical energy. The typical nominal voltage for an electrochemical cell, the efficiency and the energy density all depend on the type of materials used. If an accumulator remains unused, it loses some of its stored energy over time. This process is called “self-discharge”. The extent to which this occurs depends on the type of storage and the age of the accumulator.
A rechargeable lithium battery has the longest expected service life when its charge status is always maintained between 20% and 80%.
- Lithium:
Commonly used in watches and cameras; long operating life (up to more than 10 years) with very small currents.
Higher cell voltage around 3 V. For a few years now, only one manufacturer (Energizer) has offered a standard AA size 1.5 V lithium battery. This is an almost ideal battery (lightweight, long service life and shelf life, heavy duty). However it is expensive (costs around twice the price of a brand-name alkaline battery), hardly known and difficult to get hold of.
Caution:
Never open or recharge lithium batteries! - Lithium ion (Li-ion):
Very high energy density, lightweight, standard for higher requirements.
Only available in special battery packs for high-tech equipment (notebooks, digital cameras, camcorders, etc.).
Higher cell voltage from 3 to 4 V. - Lithium polymer:
Like Li-ion, but without liquid electrolytes; this makes flexible designs possible without rigid housing (flat). Is being increasingly used in small high-tech devices (cell phones). - Nickel cadmium (NiCd):
Favorably priced, durable, long service life when used correctly, very high currents.
No longer suitable for general applications because cadmium is a highly problematic environmental toxin of the first order.
Use only makes sense if the long service life is actually utilized and correct disposal is strictly adhered to. Mainly still used in cordless power tools.
