Overview
The Siemens 3RT2617-1AP63 is a highly efficient SIRIUS capacitor contactor designed for switching capacitive loads in applications such as reactive current compensation systems. As part of the advanced 3RT26 series, this specialized contactor is engineered to handle AC-6b loads up to 100 kVA at 400 V, providing a reliable and robust solution for modern industrial environments. The key feature of this model is its integrated precharging resistors, which are engaged via leading auxiliary contacts to limit the peak charging current of capacitors. This not only protects the device but also minimizes negative impacts on the power supply network, ensuring stable and efficient operation.
Key Features & Benefits
- Optimized for Capacitive Loads (AC-6b): Specifically designed to switch capacitive loads up to 12.5 kVAr at 400 V, making it ideal for reactive power compensation.
- Integrated Precharging Resistors: The unique design with leading auxiliary contacts and precharging resistors effectively limits inrush currents, protecting both the contactor and the power grid.
- Enhanced Network Stability: By minimizing charging current peaks, the 3RT2617-1AP63 helps to prevent voltage sags and harmonics, contributing to a more stable electrical system.
- Durable and Reliable: Built to Siemens’ high standards, this contactor ensures long-term performance and reliability in demanding industrial applications.
- Versatile Auxiliary Contacts: Features 1 Normally Open (NO) and 1 Normally Closed (NC) auxiliary contact, providing flexibility for control and monitoring circuits.
- Easy Installation: Equipped with robust screw terminals for secure and straightforward wiring.
- Compact Design: With a compact size S00, it saves space in control cabinets and panels.
Function
The Siemens 3RT2617-1AP63 capacitor contactor operates by controlling the flow of current to capacitive loads. When the control voltage is applied, leading auxiliary contacts close first, engaging the precharging resistors. These resistors limit the initial high inrush current that occurs when a capacitor is switched on. After a short delay, the main contacts close, bypassing the resistors and allowing the full current to flow. This two-stage process protects the main contacts from erosion and wear caused by high peak currents, extending the life of the contactor and the capacitors. The contactor is suitable for switching both choked and unchoked capacitors in reactive power compensation systems and is also used in converter applications.
Protection & Safety
The Siemens 3RT2617-1AP63 is designed with safety in mind. It is crucial to implement appropriate short-circuit and overload protection for all connections (main, auxiliary, and control). The technical product data sheet provides detailed information on protecting a standalone contactor. For more complex setups, such as motor feeders, users should refer to the Digital and Configuration Manuals for Load Feeders. Optional surge suppressors, including RC elements, varistors, or diodes, can be retrofitted to the coil circuit to protect against overvoltage surges, which must be ordered separately as accessories.
