Extension Units for the 16:9 PRO devices are suitable for the flexible installation of various operator controls that extend the operating options on site easily and on an individual basis. They are coordinated with the design of the 16:9 PRO devices and can easily be mounted below the device by the customers themselves.

Additionally, the Extension Unit box is available for the flexible installation of lower operator controls.

Extension Units for 16:9 PRO devices

Each Extension Unit has a certain number of mounting spaces for operator controls:

The assembly of the Extension Units is extremely easy: The individual operator controls can be easily mounted and quickly wired in the pre-punched positions without the need for special tools. Just as easily, elements can later be replaced or newly installed in the event of a defect or over the course of a machine retrofit or expansion.
A maximum of two Extension Units can be mounted below the PRO device.
The Extension Units are supplied unequipped since customers equip them themselves.

Extension Units for 16:9 PRO devices

The Extension Unit is mounted with a 16:9 display below a SIMATIC PRO device of the type “prepared for extension components”. It is supplied without operator controls; the possible installation mounting spaces are prepared for fitting operator controls. Every Extension Unit can also be combined with every display size of the unit.

Extension Units Hardwired

Up to 8 standard operator controls and 2 emergency stop buttons can be installed and connected in an Extension Unit Hardwired. If further operator controls are required, a second Extension Unit can be mounted below the PRO device.

The operator controls in the hardwired version of the Extension Unit are wired by means of two field terminals which are quick and easy to plug in or remove. This enables them to be easily connected to the automation system.

PROFINET and PROFIsafe Extension Units

All PROFINET and PROFIsafe Extension Unit mounting spaces can be used for operator controls. two of which can be emergency stop buttons. Compared with the Extension Unit Hardwired, there are no layout restrictions for operator controls with the PROFINET and PROFIsafe variants.

PROFINET and PROFIsafe Extension Units have two PROFINET-capable onboard Ethernet interfaces and can be integrated directly into existing automation networks by means of the integral switch functionality. Thanks to this switch, the PROFINET cables can be looped through with the SIMATIC HMI PRO device. The signals of the standard operator controls are transmitted via PROFINET.

For the PROFINET version, the safety-related signals from the emergency stop buttons are transmitted through the terminal strip on the back of the communication module of the Extension Unit. The maximum of two emergency stop buttons are hardwired with an F-CPU or an F-I/O module.

With the PROFIsafe versions, the safety-related signals from the emergency stop buttons are transmitted to the F-PLC via PROFIsafe.

As part of the SIMATIC portfolio, Extension Units are configured in the TIA Portal like other Siemens automation components. Using the intuitive graphical editor, the Extension Units can be configured by Drag & Drop, much as they are configured in reality. The parameters of the inputs and outputs of the operator controls can also be set in this way. An HSP (Hardware Support Package) is available for TIA Portal V14 for this purpose.

Operator controls for Extension Units for 16:9 PRO devices

The approved operator controls for Extension Units make it possible to put together a tailor-made system solution conveniently and easily using standard components. The type, number and layout of the operator controls in the Extension Units can be individually defined according to customer wishes. Furthermore, thanks to the properties of the Extension Units, these elements can be modified or replaced (even at a later date).

The operator controls are made of high quality plastic with IP65 degree of protection, ideally suited for demanding industrial applications. They also feature a modern and compact design.

Insert labels and label holders are available for self-inscription.

An operator control is supplied in a kit that contains the following parts:

• Operator control with threaded ring
• Electronic connection module
• Necessary fasteners
• Lens assemblies according to type (for illuminated pushbuttons and indicator lights)

The illuminated pushbuttons and indicator lights enable certain commands to be differentiated by color due to the different lens assemblies.

If the concepts are altered during the life of the plant, the colors of the operator controls can simply by changed at any time by replacing the lens assemblies.
