Overview

SIMATIC RF185C, RF186C/CI and RF188C/CI are communications modules for direct connection of SIMATIC identification systems to PROFINET IO/Ethernet and OPCĀ UA. Readers of the SIMATIC RF200 / RF300 / RF1000 RFID systems as well as MV300 / MV400 / MV500 optical readers can be operated on the communications modules. The CI versions of the communications modules also feature a plug enabling the connection of sensors and actuators.

Thanks to the high degree of protection and ruggedness, the communications modules are particularly suitable for machine-level use. The uniform plug-in connection system ensures rapid commissioning.

Benefits

  • Up to four parallel reader channels ensure real-time mode at dynamic read points.
  • Reader connection using an 8-pole M12 plug for fast installation of all components.
  • Two M12 plugs each for PROFINET and power supply and an integrated switch allow multiple PROFINET/Ethernet modules to be installed in a star or bus topology. Each application can then be set up quickly and inexpensively.
  • The L-coded M12 plug can conduct currents up to 16Ā A. This facilitates easy wiring of the 24Ā V cable, thus reducing cabling effort.
  • Thanks to the D-coded M12 plug for PROFINET/Ethernet, a wide range of pre-assembled cables in different lengths is available to order in the Siemens portfolio. This saves time and money during installation and ensures better quality.
  • With CI versions, up to 8Ā sensors and 8Ā actuators can be operated on the communications module. Corresponding IO-Link IO modules enable a plug-and-play setup. This considerably simplifies the construction of an Ident system with sensors/actuators.
  • Easy migration to the communications modules thanks to software compatibility with module predecessor versions (Ident profile, Rockwell library, FB45).
  • The OPC UA protocol allows these communications modules to be used for both PC and cloud applications and third-party controllers in equal measure. This reduces hardware complexity and spare part inventory requirements.
  • High-performance hardware ensures very fast data exchange with the reader. Consequently, data is available for the application even faster.
  • Simple firmware downloading in the case of function expansions and error rectification ensures high availability of the identification system.
  • Web-based management as well as adjustable and parameterizable diagnostics facilitate easy commissioning and troubleshooting.
  • The Freeport setting enables the connection of any RS232 or RS422 device via the Ident profile, Rockwell library or FB45. This makes it easy to commission RF1000, MV320, and third-party devices via the same data interface.

Application

The Ethernet-based communications modules have been designed for a wide range of applications in industrial automation and logistics. Thanks to the high IP67 degree of protection, SIMATIC RF185C, RF186C/CI and RF188C/CI can be installed as part of the process without a control cabinet.

Primary applications of SIMATIC RF185C, RF186C/CI, RF188C/CI:

  • Mechanical engineering, automation systems, conveyor systems
  • Ancillary assembly lines in the automotive industry / suppliers
  • Small assembly lines

Function

The communications modules are available in three versions with identical functionality:

  • SIMATIC RF185C for connecting one reader
  • SIMATIC RF186C for connecting two readers
  • SIMATIC RF188C for connecting four readers
  • SIMATIC RF186CI for connecting two readers and up to 8Ā sensors and 8Ā actuators
  • SIMATIC RF188CI for connecting four readers and up to 8Ā sensors and 8Ā actuators

Connection to Ethernet-based networks is via an M12 plug with D-coding. A rapidly integrated switch enables both star and line topologies to be set up

The communications module has an M12 plug with L-coding in the male version available for the 24Ā V power supply. The power can be transferred to further loads at a second L-coded female connector. L-coded plugs can conduct a continuous current of up to 12Ā A, within a limited temperature range even up to 16Ā A (1L+ and 2L+).

A pre-assembled reader cable, available in lengths from 2Ā m to 50Ā m, is used to connect up to four readers to the communications module. The cable can also be assembled by the customer as required.

The communications module supplies the connected readers with power. In the communications module, the power supply of the readers has an electronic fuse for each reader connection. The maximum permissible current per reader is 800Ā mA at 24 V. In the RS232 Freeport mode, an additional 5 V with a maximum current of 500Ā mA is made available to the reader.

The data in the transponder is generally accessed by direct addressing using absolute addresses.

Error messages and operating states (transponder in the field, status, etc.) are indicated additionally by means of LEDs for each reader to simplify commissioning and service.

With CI versions, an A-coded M12 sensor plug enables the direct connection of a sensor or actuator. An IO-Link expansion module can be used to provide up to 8Ā digital inputs and 8 digital outputs for the sensor technology. Siemens offers the following IO modules:

  • 6ES7 141-5BF00-0BL0 (8xDI, with M8 sensor plugs)
  • 6ES7 143-5BF00-0BL0 (4xDI + 4xDO, with M8 sensor plugs)
  • 6ES7 141-5AH00-0BL0 (8xDI with M12, sensor plugs)
  • 6ES7 143-5AH00-0BL0 (8xDI + 8xDO, with M12 sensor plugs)
  • 6ES7 142-5AF00-0BL0 (8xDO, output current up to 2Ā A, with M12 sensor plugs)

The Freeport setting enables the connection of any devices with RS232 or RS422 interfaces to the communications module. The user sets up the serial data for the connected device directly in the application. The communications module also provides a 5Ā V supply for RS232 devices. This enables SIMATIC RF1000 and MV320 readers to be directly connected to the RF18xC for operation.

Integration

Use in PROFINET networks

The SIMATIC RF18xC communications modules are designed for use in PROFINET networks. They are an integral part of the TIA Portal from V15 SP1. You will find the modules, which can be parameterized via the “SIMATIC Ident” technology object, in the hardware catalog, and the functions and blocks required for operation under Instructions / Optional packages / SIMATIC Ident.

Integration in STEP 7 Classic and third-party systems is performed via the GSDML file. The SIMATIC RF18xC modules can then be configured using the device manager of the TIA Portal or another PROFINET tool.

In addition to programming via user-friendly Ident profile functions, programming via FB 45 is still possible (not for S7-1200/1500). The transponder is generally addressed using absolute addresses. For large volumes of data and complex tag operations, the blocks can process chained commands.

Data is exchanged between SIMATIC RF18xC and the application by means of acyclic data records. This ensures that large volumes of data can be transferred from/to the communications module without loading the bus cycle.

Using the “RFID standard profile” GSDML setting, the RF18xC can be operated directly in a SIMOTION.

With the CI versions of the communications modules, sensors are directly addressed via digital inputs/outputs in the process image of the PLC.

Use with OPC UA

The SIMATIC RF18xC communications modules feature an OPC UA server. This can be used extremely effectively to connect RFID systems to cloud-based systems (e.g. MindSphere), SIMATIC IT and ERP systems.

An additional OPC UA function is achieved by executing the main RFID application via a PROFINET network, while at the same time transferring the results to another address (e.g. MindSphere) via OPC UA.

An OPC UA client that wishes to use the full RFID functionality of the readers connected to an RF18xC communications module needs to support the following fundamental OPC UA access mechanisms: Data access (DA), events and methods.

The command structure of the OPC UA server in the communications module complies with the “OPC Unified Architecture for AutoID Companion Specification”.

Use in Ethernet/IP networks

The SIMATIC RF18xC communications modules are designed for use in Ethernet/IP networks. A DHCP server automatically assigns an IP address to the communications module. Alternatively, the user can assign static IP addresses on the DHCP server. The standard tool for assigning IP addresses is called the BOOTP/DHCP server and is included in the RSLinx software package.

The RF18xC modules communicate with the application via implicit and explicit messages. Commands and results are transferred with explicit messages. The user sets up the commands directly in the application program. Application examples are available to make getting started easier.

Use with the XML protocol

SIMATIC RF18xC communications modules are designed for use in Ethernet networks based on TCP/IP networks. The IP address of the SIMATIC RF18xC is set using the SINEC PNI (Primary Network Initialization). The RF18xC is then ready for operation.

Communication with the SIMATIC RF18xC is implemented using XML commands. XML commands have a simple structure. This makes programming of the RF18xC under any operating system very straightforward. The simple command set of the RF18xC can also be easily programmed in any Ethernet-capable PLC.
